Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convince the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment: of sin, … John 16:7-9

Rev. Fr. John-Mary Benedict Ntol Atep

Thanks be to the Holy Spirit for the opportunity to pray a novena in honour of Him. As we pray in Him, that is, praying to Him and with Him, let us do the needful by identifying, acknowledging and processing our sins no matter how trivial they may be because “The sacrifice of the wicked (unrepentant sinner) is abhorrent to Yahweh, dear to him is the prayer of the honest” (Pro. 15:8). The good news is that the Holy Spirit is overcharged with abundance to reveal certain realities to our minds and beyond our mind’s reach.

But the Spirit severally encounters obstacles that prevent us from benefiting from the treasury of God, the graces of Jesus Christ and His goodness. The obstacles are as a result of our relapse to being unspiritual. St. Paul describes our unspiritual inclination as follows: “The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (1Cor. 2:14 ).

What are the things that make us unspiritual persons? The central word is SIN – Serious Interior Negligence. The root of our sins is our uncontrollable and unconquered “animal instinct.” This instinct manifest in our thoughts, our emotions and desires. We need to ask the Holy Spirit of God to cleanse us of the filth in us that sin has covered and is inhibiting us from encountering the Holy Spirit. Purity is so important that one of the beatitudinal teaching of Christ is “Blessed are the pure in heart; they shall see God” (Matt. 5:8). Purity is tightly linked to God that it is possible to say for instance that “Knowledge is given to everyone in the measure of each one’s purity” (Arethas of Caesarea). Let’s call on the Holy Spirit to purify us and make us clean in order to receive His gifts, charisms and fruit in plenty.

Action planGALATIANS 5:17-21

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh.  For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would. But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are plain: immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Check the foregoing and ask the the Holy Spirit through His fire to purify you.

Purity is an angelic virtue. Hence, the ten principle virtue of the Queen of Angels, the Blessed Virgin Mary includes Her Surpassing Purity and Her Angelic sweetness. May Our Lady Most Pure, the Spouse of the Holy Spirit intercede for us to maintain inner purity in our spiritual life through Christ Our Lord Amen. *O Immaculate Heart of Mary! Make my body pure and my soul holy* 🙏

In Acts 2:38, St Peter summarized the process God has set for us to follow to receive His Holy Spirit: “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” We pray today that God would give us the grace to please the spirit and not gratify the flesh.
May we listen more to the Spirit and the Grace’s that comes from the Spirit will be the cleansing ‘sponges’ of the flesh.
    Gratias Padre

Here is a very powerful construct: “the cleansing ‘sponges’ of the flesh.” Thanks

Our Lady most pure obtain for us purity of heart. We can also help ourselves by bringing God into our daily activities and situations. Like what does God expect of me in this situation? Eg, Is it to be jealous or envious of my friend’s or neighbor’s success in life. When God expect me to be happy and rejoice with such friend or neighbor. Letting God’s expectations guide our daily activities will not only help us overcome sin but also make us friend of the Holy Spirit. God bless you Fr.

Thank you Father for another enlightening reflection on the Holy Spirit. I sincerely thank Him for the wealth of spiritual knowledge received through His inspired words in you. As you have advised, I pray He cleanses us from our spiritual filth arising from serious neglect of the care of our interior life. May He also strengthen our will to reject the desires of the flesh as highlighted in the fifth chapter of Galatians so we can be better disposed to receiving greater knowledge of Him & His 7 gifts.

Thanks Lady Juliana-Mary for you words and great desire. The hidden secret of the spiritual life is the interior life. A life of inside-out. Holy Spirit take absolute possession of your friend and worshipper.

Comment (Required) there are so many things that make me unspiritual, I know them above all the Holy Spirit know them more than I do. Each time I do not receive Communion, it is those things you mention in your reflection that prevented me. So I pray that let the Holy Spirit come afresh on me and cleans me so that I will not fall and remain to the ground forever, that I will always get up and follow the direction of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thank you Fr. Continue to pray for me.
