THE SCHOOL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: EXPERIENCING THE HOLY SPIRIT THROUGH ST. LOUIS-MARIE DE MONTFORT
Rev. Fr. John-Mary Benedict Ntol Atep
God the Holy Spirit, who does not produce any divine person, became fruitful through Mary whom he espoused. It was with her, in her and of her that he produced his masterpiece, God-made-man, and that he produces every day until the end of the world the members of the body of this adorable Head. For this reason the more he finds Mary his dear and inseparable spouse in a soul the more powerful and effective he becomes in producing Jesus Christ in that soul and that soul in Jesus Christ. – St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, TD. no. 20.
Today is the feast day of St. Louis-Marie de Montfort. With joy in our hearts and countless meditations we celebrate his heavenly birthday. More so, Happy feast day to all St. Louis-Marie’s namesakes with a special reference to REV. FR. LOUIS-MARIE MFON MATHIAS. The best gifts to present to our spiritual mentor are: the Holy Mass, Holy Communion and the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
He is one of the saints we usually invoke during our concluding prayer of the Holy Rosary. He shares some similar characteristics with the Holy Spirit. He is a hidden and neglected saint. Many Catholics pray the Rosary, invoke him but with a fair or no knowledge about his person, works and roles in the life of the Holy Spirit, the Church and our individual lives. He is a special teacher in the school of the Holy Spirit because of his contributions in exposing the works of the Holy Spirit in the inner life of God, the Church and the salvation of humankind. Hence, he is invoked as a “Heart ever docile to the Holy Spirit” and “Teacher of the people of God.”
Furthermore, St. Louis-Marie de Montfort is invoked, honoured and loved amidst other titles and litanies as an “Ardent disciple of Jesus Christ the Incarnate Wisdom”, “Eloquent preacher of the Cross”, “Singer of the praises of the Sacred Heart”, “Loving slave of Jesus in Mary”, “Faithful son of the handmaid of the Lord”, “Apostle of the Most Holy Rosary”, “Preacher of the Mother of the Redeemer”, “Servant of the poor and the afflicted, “Man of solitude and prayer”, “Model of priests and missionaries”, “Fervent minister of the Holy Eucharist”, “Restorer of devotion to the Blessed Sacrament”, “Marvel of poverty and abandonment to Divine Providence”, “Founder of Religious congregations”, and “Apostle of the end times”,
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort extensively writes about the inspirations of the Holy Spirit in the Church. So, from his masterpiece like The love of eternal wisdom, True devotion to Mary, Friends of the Cross, and so on, we gather a confirmation of the influence of the Holy Spirit in the identity, mission and ministry of the Catholic Church, Sacred Scriptures and Sacred Traditions. St. Louis-Marie de Montfort also reveals how the Holy Spirit impacts so much on our personal experiences of the Holy Spirit in our souls. For example, in the Letter to the Friends of the Cross, he says: “a sensible joy in our sufferings… comes from the soul, which is so overwhelmed with the divine joy of the Holy Spirit” (LFC 51); in The Admirable Secret of the Rosary, he exclaims: “When the Holy Spirit has revealed this secret (of the Rosary) to a priest and director of souls, how blessed is that priest!” (ASR 1). Again, in True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, he writes: “When the Holy Spirit, her spouse, finds Mary in a soul, he hastens there and enters fully into it” (TD 36); or “To rid ourselves of selfishness, we must first become thoroughly aware, by the light of the Holy Spirit, of our tainted nature” (TD 79); or “The Holy Spirit himself will lead this faithful soul from strength to strength, from grace to grace, from light to light” (TD 119); and, in speaking of the effects of the faithful practice of the “perfect devotion” to Our Lady, he says: “By the light which the Holy Spirit will give you through Mary, his faithful spouse, you will perceive the evil inclinations of your fallen nature” (TD 213); and again: “The Holy Spirit, finding his dear Spouse present again in souls, will come down into them with great power. He will fill them with his gifts” (TD 217).
From the teachings of St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, it is crystal clear that if we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit, He will perform might works through our docility, devotions, way of life and our longings. The Holy Spirit is still working tirelessly today in the Church, our world and in our souls. Therefore, let us consciously promote Him following the footprints of St. Louis-Marie de Montfort.
Let us pray.
O God, Who in the power of the Holy Spirit hast made Saint Louis-Marie an ardent apostle of Christ Crucified and a faithful son of the Virgin Mary; Grant that through his example and intercession we may be renewed in the spirit of our baptism and be always faithful to Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit. One God, forever and ever. Amen.
