OCTOBER DEVOTION – THE HOLY ROSARY – DAY 4 – THE HOLY ROSARY AS A POPULAR DEVOTION
Popular devotions are those devotions that have gained the interest of the Universal Church and which she cherishes. They include the Holy Rosary, the Way of the Cross, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, Novenas, Marian Devotions, and Devotions to Saints. Sacrosanctum Concilium says, “The Sacred Liturgy does not exhaust the entire activity of the Church… Popular devotions of the Christian people are to be highly commended, provided they accord with the laws and norms of the Church, above all, when they are ordered by the Apostolic See.” These popular devotions are also signs of the Church’s exemplification of her faith. For instance, the Rosary is “a compendium of the Gospel” and an epitome of the salvific events of Christ by which the mysteries of Christ and the object of our faith are projected. The object of our faith is Jesus Christ and His Church. A conscious repetition of the Hail Mary (the Angelic salutation) is a mark of faith in the Word of God. However, it is so disheartening that these days, the Rosary which is almost one of the symbols of our Catholic and Christian identity has become a fashion piece. This is contrary to what it stands for. Nonetheless, it is also reverently hung in cars, worn by Catholics and non-Catholics, and above all prayed at different intervals and settings of pious societies and Local Churches. Consequently, devotions in May and October centre on the propagation of the Rosary and the role of our Lady of the Rosary in our journey of faith (and our salvation history). Embrace and pray your way through with the Rosary.
Prayer: Lord give us the grace to pray and treasure our Rosary daily and equip us with the virtues associated with those who pray the Rosary. Amen.
