OCTOBER DEVOTION – THE HOLY ROSARY – DAY 2 – OUR ANNUNCIATION!
Marian spirituality is one of the pillars of our Catholic faith and there are two great ends to this wonderful and enduring way of life – the Rosary and the cultivation and practice of virtues. The Rosary itself is a prayer that can assist us not only to cultivation virtues but also to practice them. How can this unique point of the Rosary come alive? It is through our prayerful reflection on the mysteries of the Rosary. We have twenty of them and each mystery is a revelation and event of our salvation history as wrought by Jesus Christ, Mary and the Church. Again, each mystery indicates our yearnings and needs in life. So, if you have any need, you can equally address it through the mysteries of the Holy Rosary. Today, we shall begin with the Annunciation mystery. It is meant to assist us to handle our emotions in times of threatening and challenging news.
The Virgin Mary was overwhelmed by the annunciation from the angel Gabriel but she was able to handle her emotions and she did not despair. How could one get the news of getting pregnant without a man? Giving birth to a child without wedlock! You think it was easy for our Lady? No! It was not. No wonder, she asked how this could be. She had emotional first aid and we can inherit it from her through the Annunciation mystery. We have had terrible news of the loss of our lovely ones like our dear parents, friends, colleagues and other associates. We have received nastiest news of terminal illnesses, retrenchment, compulsory retirement and so forth. We can learn to handle such news by releasing them on the beads of the Holy Rosary by meditatively reflecting on the event of the mystery of the annunciation. Hail Mary …
Prayer: Mary, Lady of the Annunciation,
Gabriel’s words sent you on a journey
through confusion and bewilderment
to acceptance and trust in God.
Pray for those who have had their own annunciation;
bring a mother’s love and tenderness
to their fear and distress.
