OCTOBER DEVOTION – DAY – 16 – THE HOLY ROSARY – THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS!
Today we celebrate St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) who between 1673 and 1956 had special visions that inspired the ancient devotion to the Sacred Heart. So, our prayer today is to Jesus through the Rosary for assistance to deepen our relationship with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is interesting to note that there is a serious link between the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Hence, the Blessed Virgin Mary in her promises of devotion to the Holy Rosary states the fourteenth promise, “All who recite the Rosary are my sons (daughters), and brothers (and sisters) of my only son Jesus Christ.” Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is not optional but essential and in order to understand and appreciate the Heart of Jesus, we need His Mother. His Mother has generously given us a spiritual tool to communicate contemplatively with the Sacred Heart of Jesus – the Holy Rosary. The mysteries of the Rosary reveals so much about the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
What is it that attracted Jesus to us? Our state of misery caused by our sinfulness but repaired by His redemptive act that was carried out on the Cross of Calvary. This action of Jesus is completely that of Love. It is time to ask the pertinent question, what is devotion to the Sacred Heart? “Sacred Heart” refers to the Heart of Jesus of Nazareth who is the Son of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the chief aspect of His person. Sacred Heart “Devotion” means devotion to the Heart of Jesus, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Note, to be devoted does not only mean to say certain prayers (like Morning Offering, Act of Reparation and Daily Renewal) or observe certain practices like receiving Holy Eucharist frequently. No doubt these are good but “To live out devotion to the Heart of Christ we need to let the Love of God touch us and re-create us, and then respond by totally dedicating, totally committing, (and) totally offering ourselves to Him.”
