OCTOBER DEVOTION – DAY – 15 – THE HOLY ROSARY – PURGATORY
Dearest in Christ through Mary I greet you in the name of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. One of our very important task of love of God and neighbour is the concern for emptying purgatory. Like the Holy Rosary that is being neglected and abandoned by many Catholics, souls in purgatory also suffer the cruelty of negligence and abandonment. Purgatory according to the Baltimore Catechism is “God’s Hospital” where “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven” (CCC. 1030). More so, the greatest challenge faced by the souls in purgatory is their inability to pray for themselves and to care for their well-being. This is where the help of those of the Militant Church is expected and longed for. Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerick in her visions saw it very clear that the souls in purgatory do not receive direct assistance from Heaven but all their needs are supplied by the faithful on earth which is why we are to constantly pray for the souls in purgatory. This being so, popes, saints and the prayer traditions of the Church have recommended various prayers for souls in purgatory. A notable example of such prayer method and a unique one indeed is the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I am such you have many brethren and loved ones who have gone before us and they are marked with the signs of faith? Therefore, let us pray the Holy Rosary for their release from purgatory. On July 13 1917, Our Lady requested the Fatima children to recite the Holy Rosary and to add: “Oh My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy.” Dear friends in Christ, those in most need of God’s mercy are the souls in purgatory. Please pray the Rosary for them.
