OCTOBER DEVOTION – DAY – 09 – THE HOLY ROSARY – HEALING OF CULTURAL WOUNDS
Common or uncommon knowledge reveals that we hurt others when we are hurt and through such vengeful actions we experience relief. I remember some days that my teachers were hard on us and after investigations, we realized that they were hurt either by their husbands or wives or family members. Again, reading through the Book of the Prophet Jonah, it was crystal clear to me that Jonah though open and sincere about the way he felt with God, displayed cultural wounds and intolerance against the Assyrians (Ninevites). Jonah represents our story of cultural wounds as many of us have been wounded from our families, schools, Churches and other human relationship organizations. Cultural wounds continue to gain grounds in our lives and societies because of our wrong values system, false religious systems, false intergenerational beliefs and the sluggishness or slothfulness to forgive and forget the past and move on in life. Here comes the good news: The Rosary of the Virgin Mary is a special instrument to befriend and heal the memories of cultural wounds. St. Pope John-Paul II is very certain about the power of the Rosary to cleanse our memories and he affirms, “Mary constantly sets before the faithful the ‘mysteries’ of her Son, with the desire that the contemplation of those mysteries will release all their saving power. In the recitation of the Rosary, the Christian community enters into contact with the memories and the contemplative gaze of Mary.” The memories of the mysteries of the Holy Rosary wipes away the effects of our cultural wounds. Therefore, let us pray the Holy Rosary for the healing of our cultural wounds which are impacting so heavily on us in negative ways. Our Lady of the Holy Rosary – Pray for us!
