Month of Mary – May Devotions – Day 6 – The ardent Charity of Mary!
For some time now, it is becoming very difficult and challenging to express love in the Christian perspective. The word nowadays is expressed to mean many things such as affinity to a particular food, family relationship, special friendship, and romantic relationship. I dare say that the original meaning of love from the point of Jesus and God who is love has been hijacked by modernists and hedonists! So much so that it is becoming very difficult and confusing to say to somebody today “I love you.” Some say that they do it hidden! But for us Christians, love is our trademark! Love is the primary nature and definition of the God of Jesus Christ. Accordingly in 1 John 4:8, St. John says “God is love.” And this love of God has been revealed to us as John 3:16 explains: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son …” This gift of the genuine love of God as His Son has come to us through the person of the Blessed Virgin Mary. No wonder she is Our Lady of Love/Charity. So, Mary our Mother has a strong association with the love of God up to the point of bringing Him to bear in our world. The following passage is called the Marian beatitude and it explicates the nature of Mary’s love. The love of Mother Mary is Maternal listening and is highlighted as follows: “As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it” (Luke 11:27-28). This passage has been misinterpreted severally to mean that Jesus Christ denigrated His Mother. But for those with good understanding, it means that Jesus celebrated His Mother Mary and blessed her because of her loving listening to the Word of God. Mother’s love is also sacrificial in nature. She is full of self-giving and remember how she visited and empowered Elizabeth in Luke 1:56. Her love remains self-sacrificing as she accompanied her Son on the way to Calvary and stood with Him in His agonising moments (John 19:25-27). Her love is sensitivity to the needs of people as she interceded during the wedding at Cana (John 2:1-11). In short, Our Lady remains the embodiment of God’s love! Do I love genuinely? Is my sense of love informed by the understanding of the world and its drives of sensualities, romanticism, pragmatism, ethnicity and selfishness?
Prayer: Mary our Mother, we your children sincerely need the power to love genuinely the way you love the Blessed Trinity and the entire human race. Holy Scriptures, the Traditions of the Church and the Magisterium have taught us how to love according to the heart and mind of God, but we are not yet there and we intend to do so. Your Son, our Lord and God says: “This is my commandment: love one another, as I have loved you.” Mother, attract from Heaven and shower upon us the grace to love God with our whole hearts, our minds, our souls and strengths and to love all peoples caringly irrespective of the hurts and challenges we may experience daily; because to love our fellow human beings is to love God who created them in His image. Amen. Our Lady of Charity – Pray for us!
