Month of Mary-May Devotions-Day 5-Blind obedience of Mary!
I sincerely stand to be corrected as I make the following categorical statement that says that of all the undertakings in the spiritual life, obedience is the most challenging and talked about virtue to cultivate and practice. Obedience is a very touchy subject and disobedience is gradually becoming a forgotten vice! There are many reports of children disobeying parents and teachers, wives finding it difficult to obey their husbands as well as husbands finding it increasingly difficult to love genuinely according to the command of the Lord (Eph. 5:22-25). Still irksome is the issue of insubordination in civil and public arenas. It all started from our first parents, Adam and Eve who failed before God because of the issues of disobedience (Gen. 3). They fell from a state of innocent obedience to God to a state of guilty disobedience. However, our God who is called Fidelity had to restore our dignity and capacity to obey by empowering a pure creature of His, the person of the Blessed Virgin Mary to undo the disobedience of Adam and Eve by her total obedience to the will of God (Gen. 3:15, Luke 1:38). God be praised for His goodness! Obedience is “The moral virtue that inclines the will to comply with the will of another who has the right to command” (Hardon, 1985). Obedience, although difficult and demanding, is Our Lady’s distinguishing mark and through her various events and activities with God, her Son and the Holy Spirit she exemplifies obedience in her life. Hence, she is the Daughter of God the Father, Mother of God the Son and Spouse of God the Holy Spirit. She exercises her will in conformity to the will of God as she blindly obeys to be the Mother of the Son of God without her full knowledge. She obeys God blindly by accepting to care for a child that her world and ours today would not understand. She loves passionately a Son among a people that would crucify him, and cherishes a child that would conquer death and silence all demons without doubt. So much to say about the blind obedience of MARY. Mary model of obedience – pray for us! The question is: why do I obey God and His commandments? For the sake of genuine love of Him or out of fear and punishment?
Prayer: Lord God, we pray for a humble and open heart to love, obey you, and your commandments which are good for our well-being and salvation. We are confronted severally with contradictory human hearts that find it difficult to access your Holy will as against the devilish and worldly wills. So, we pray for an innocent and strong will to conform itself to your Holy will, so that we can listen, respond and merit the joy of our salvation, through the powerful intercession of your obedient servant Mary. Amen.
