Month of Mary – May Devotions – Day 25 – The Generosity of Mary!
When talking about generosity, key concepts are giving, sharing, forgiving and service. It is a virtue that we strive to emulate from God and Our Lady who give and forgive in order to redeem and transform us from selfishness, the danger of getting and forgetting. A lot of marriages, friendships and other relationships today cannot experience stability not because relationships generally are difficult or impossible but because many hoard love, many are not selfless and many are not ready to serve but want to be served.
The case is quite different with Our Lady. She began her life and relationship with God through the virtue of generosity. She faced the risk of divorce with St. Joseph to give herself to God for the Immaculate Conception and Incarnation of Jesus Christ (Matt. 1:18-19). In order to secure the Child Jesus, she flew to Egypt the land of her forebear’s slavery and horror (Matt. 2:14). The height of Our Lady’s generosity was her giving of Jesus to be a sacrificial lamb for the redemption of the world and humanity. In Our Lady, we experience the power of generosity of service which she exemplified for the good of her cousin Elizabeth. That generous act as demonstrated by her visit has left an indelible mark in the history of salvation. It was from that visit that we got the Hail Mary prayer. Thanks Our Dear Lady! In short our Lady’s generosity could be best described as a generosity of devotion.
Generosity of devotion in the sense that her generosity was based on her total self-giving to Love God with her whole heart, mind, soul and spirit and to completely do the will of God. Human creatures over the years before our Lady had strived to attain this level of generosity but they could not only Our Lady has accentuated the barriers and today we appreciate and revere her. She did her generosity to God and humankind because she believed and operated her life under the logic and rules of divine providence. Meaning, she knew that the more one gives the more one would experience the infinite generosity of God. That is no one can compete with God in generosity.
Prayer: Our Lady of Divine Providence – pray for us to avert selfishness, avarice, hoarding spirit, corruption and unforgiving spirit. Amen.
