Month of Mary – May Devotions – Day 20 – The Holy Spirit and Mary!

Happy Solemnity of Pentecost! There is a special relationship that exists between the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin Mary and this is best expounded by the third article of the creed, “He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and was born of the Virgin Mary.” This explains the heart of the spiritual life. An eternal principle is given here: a spiritual person or one who is conscious of his/her spiritual life is to work and do all things by having the Holy Spirit and Mary in their hearts, on their minds and in their souls. For the two are inseparable! The fruit of relating with the Holy Spirit and Mary is JESUS CHRIST. St Louis Marie de Montfort says it eloquently and beautifully:

God the Holy Spirit, who does not produce any divine person, became fruitful through Mary whom he espoused. It was with her, in her and of her that he produced his masterpiece, God-made-man, and that he produces every day until the end of the world the members of the body of this adorable Head. For this reason the more he finds Mary his dear and inseparable spouse in a soul the more powerful and effective he becomes in producing Jesus Christ in that soul and that soul in Jesus Christ.

The Incarnation and the Pentecost are the chief events and mysteries that unveil the relationship of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit. Two things make the inseparable relationship of the Holy Spirit and Mary; The Immaculate Conception of Mary and her consent to the Holy Spirit. Since grace builds on nature, it is only Mary that the Holy Spirit finds as a perfect ground for His work to be done and this is because of Mary’s holiness that is defined by her Immaculate Conception. After about four thousand years of silence between heaven and earth, “In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary” (Luke 1: 26-27). What was to be accomplished through the Lady? The Incarnation of the Word and for the Word to become flesh and dwelt among us, there was a need for the union of the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin. Thus the angel says, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you” (Luke 1:35). Again, this explicates the inseparable union between the Holy Spirit and Mary. “When the Holy Spirit finds Mary in a soul, He flies to it” says St. Louis de Montfort.

The same is true of the Pentecost event/mystery as it displays the inseparable relationship between The Holy Spirit and Mary (Acts 1:14ff) in the birth and commissioning of the Church. “The Holy Spirit operates always with her. Come a little further to the feast of Pentecost – that tremendous occasion when the Church was launched upon its mission. Mary was there. It was by her prayer that the Holy Spirit descended on the Mystical Body and came to abide in it with all his “greatness, power, glory, victory and majesty” (1 Chron. 29:11). Mary reproduces in respect of the Mystical Body of Christ every service which she rendered to his actual Body” (The official handbook of the Legion of Mary, p. 278). So, Jesus Christ the head of the Church became God – made – Man through the relationship of the Holy Spirit and Mary and the Church which is the body of Christ equally came about through the relationship of the Holy Spirit and Mary.

Finally, we will keep growing and excelling in the spiritual life, if we respect and appreciate the inseparable relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin Mary. We are to fight our spiritual battles by relying on their spiritual synergy and nothing more or less.

Prayer for Pentecost (cf. John 16:13-14 and John 14:26)

Christ said, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” Spirit of truth, guide me always, I pray.

Christ said, “He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you.” Holy Spirit, help me to glorify The Father and to declare with my life that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Christ said, “The Counselor, the Holy Spirit will teach you all things and brings to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” Divine Counselor, please enlighten my mind to the teachings of Christ, and help me to recall His words that are spirit and truth.

Holy Spirit, please come anew; fill me with your love, life, joy, peace, and wisdom as I pray for my personal Pentecost through the intercession of your beloved spouse, the Virgin Mary. Amen.

Please God, grant that we will not stop staying close to your blessed mother so that we will continue to enjoy the presence of your Holy Spirit in our lives. And please open the eyes of those our brethren who still resist her motherly affections so they can also fully enjoy the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
