Month of Mary – May Devotions – Day 19 – Mary and Spiritual Battles!

May 19, 2018frjohnma

The ancestry of our spiritual battles was started by God through the prophetic declaration of the Protoevangelium. A first hint about the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in her defense of the children of God against the assaults and tactics of the devil and his agents: “I shall put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; it will bruise your head and you will strike its heel” (Genesis 3:15). The foregoing biblical verse is first a prophecy of the coming of a Messiah to restore what the devil had attempted to destroy. It also speaks of the future conflict that would be between a Woman, her Seed, and the serpent that deceived man in the Garden of Eden. The Woman is the Blessed Virgin Mary. Views from the pews reveal that many take the issues of satan and his demons to the extreme. It is either they are too “enlightened” and underestimate their operations against our well-being or they  are too afraid of the operations of Satan and his demons and end up interpreting every adversity, challenge and trauma as satanic and evil. St. Paul speaks to the first group: “For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens” (Eph. 6:12). And to the second group they bring to reality the words of Jesus: “Some people are like seed along the path where the Word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the Word that was sown in them” (Mark 4:5). They easily forget the Words of Jesus: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you.…” (Luke 10:18). Whichever of the perspective above that one aligns his/herself is dangerous and harmful? The consolation we have is that there is a mighty warrior against satan, created and commissioned by  God. Very few are aware of her might and triumph over the powers of the devil and his gimmicks. I am sure you may have noticed that the devil has been fighting to exterminate Marian awareness and devotions. Hence, the most controversial and dividing lines in Christendom that raises unending arguments and confusions are Marian dogmas, doctrines and devotion to the Virgin Mary. This is so because the devil hates Mary and cannot withstand her humility. The Devil is proud and it would be too shameful for him to be crushed by a creature of God and a woman for that matter. If Jesus crushes him, he would not be perturbed, after all He is the Son of God and has all the powers in heaven and on earth. What the proud people led by the devil hate most and drives them crazy is humiliation and this is the greatest weakness of the devil and proud people. If you want to humble him, bring in Mary in your prayers, if you want to subdue him, invoke Mary’s titles, and if you want to control him, apply the virtues of Mary in your life. Please listen to Mary’s proclamations against the devil: “He puts forth His arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly” (Luke 1:51-52). God bless your May devotions and deliver you from the tricks of the devils. Amen.

Prayer: Majestic Queen of Heaven and Mistress of the Angels, you did receive from God the power and commission to crush the head of Satan; therefore, we humbly beseech you, send the legions of heaven, that, under your command, they may seek out all evil spirits, engage them everywhere in battle, curb their insolence, and hurl them back into the pit of hell. “Who is like God?” O good and tender Mother, you shall ever be our hope and the object of our love. O Mother of God, send forth the holy Angels to defend us and drive far from us the cruel foe. Holy Angels and Archangels, defend us and keep us.
