THE SCHOOL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: NOVENA TOTHE HOLY SPIRIT DAY 3 – PURIFICATION
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convince the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment: of sin, … John 16:7-9

Thanks be to the Holy Spirit for the opportunity to pray a novena in honour of Him. As we pray in Him, that is, praying to Him and with Him, let us do the needful by identifying, acknowledging and processing our sins no matter how trivial they may be because “The sacrifice of the wicked (unrepentant sinner) is abhorrent to Yahweh, dear to him is the prayer of the honest” (Pro. 15:8). The good news is that the Holy Spirit is overcharged with abundance to reveal certain realities to our minds and beyond our mind’s reach.
But the Spirit severally encounters obstacles that prevent us from benefiting from the treasury of God, the graces of Jesus Christ and His goodness. The obstacles are as a result of our relapse to being unspiritual. St. Paul describes our unspiritual inclination as follows: “The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (1Cor. 2:14 ).
What are the things that make us unspiritual persons? The central word is SIN – Serious Interior Negligence. The root of our sins is our uncontrollable and unconquered “animal instinct.” This instinct manifest in our thoughts, our emotions and desires. We need to ask the Holy Spirit of God to cleanse us of the filth in us that sin has covered and is inhibiting us from encountering the Holy Spirit. Purity is so important that one of the beatitudinal teaching of Christ is “Blessed are the pure in heart; they shall see God” (Matt. 5:8). Purity is tightly linked to God that it is possible to say for instance that “Knowledge is given to everyone in the measure of each one’s purity” (Arethas of Caesarea). Let’s call on the Holy Spirit to purify us and make us clean in order to receive His gifts, charisms and fruit in plenty.
Action plan – GALATIANS 5:17-21
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would. But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are plain: immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Check the foregoing and ask the the Holy Spirit through His fire to purify you.
