OCTOBER DEVOTION – DAY – 03 – THE HOLY ROSARY – SELF-DISCIPLINE
Self-discipline is a training of the heart and mind to actualize self-mastery or self-control over our lifestyle (Gal. 5:23). Self-discipline is a very important skill that every human person should cultivate and practise. It is simply an inner strength that controls oneself, actions and reactions. Self-discipline is a personal leadership quality that we all need in order to live our lives to the fullest. A disciplined person’s life is characterised by simple but necessary rules or principles, and driven by values. The rule is this, if you fail to control the self, then the self will control you. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” says Aristotle. The Holy Rosary offers us the opportunity to meditate on the mysteries of Christ and its method is based on repetition. St. Pope John-Paul II teaches that the method of repetition “applies above all to the Hail Mary, repeated ten times in each mystery. If this repetition is considered superficially, there could be a temptation to see the Rosary as a dry and boring exercise. It is quite another thing, however, when the Rosary is thought of as an outpouring of that love which tirelessly returns to the person loved with expressions similar in their content but ever fresh in terms of the feeling pervading them.” The Rosary has the efficacy to help us to cultivate and practise self-discipline, if we can be faithful to its daily recitation and devotion.
