The profound humility of Mary

“While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, ‘Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.’ He replied to him, ‘Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?’ Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother” (Matt. 12:46-50).

There is something so enigmatic and remarkable about the person of Mary our Mother! And that is her humility that is qualified as profound. What is profound about it, you may ask? It is because she who is a mother to a Son and the only Begotten one of the Father and herself, could accept and support the divine mission of her only Son. The mission of her Son is the Cross that is meant to achieve the aim of the Heavenly Father – our salvation. Secondly, she accepts the reality of her life and works according to it rather than against it. Reflecting on the passage above, the comment of Jesus is enough to put Mary off! But she accepts because of the resignation of her will to the mission of her Son. Virgin Most Humble pray for us to be humble and to always accept the will of God as you did. Hence you are the handmaid of the Lord (Luke 1:38).

Prayer: Lord God, through your Only Begotten Son and in the power of the Holy Spirit, through the maternal intercession of our humble Mother, help us to learn from our Blessed Mother Mary on how to accept our realities first before seeking for healing or/and celebrating them. Secondly, no matter how humiliating they may be, give us the strength to accept them before transforming them into points of growth. Help us to train our unstable ego to adhere to your will and nothing else, nothing more and nothing less. Amen. Virgin most Humble – pray for us.

Very true! The ego is really the enemy we must conquer to advance in virtue. Mother Mary, pray for us!
