Month of Mary – May Devotions – Day 18 – Most Sorrowful Mother!
Mater Dolorosa, please intercede for us to be empowered with the strength to find joy through meaning in our human suffering as we reflect on your very precious dimension of life that is rooted in the love of God. Amen. The sorrows of Our Lady depict the face of her human suffering and how she handled them. Her sorrowful experiences are well reflected in Sacred Scriptures. So, we have seven events in her life that reveals her seven sorrows amidst others such as the prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:34, 35); the flight into Egypt (St. Matt. 2:13, 14); the loss of the Child Jesus in the temple (Luke 2: 43-45); the meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross; the Crucifixion; the taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross; and the burial of Jesus. The sorrows of Mary could be best understood and appreciated from one of her identity insignia, precisely her name “Mary.” Traditionally the name Mary (English) is from the Hebrew – Myriam/Miriam or Aramaic – Maryam/Mariam (Maunder, 2007). In Greek and Latin, it translates as Mariam in the Greek Old Testament translation and Maria in the Greek New Testament (Buono, 1999). While in French, it translates as Marie. Now from the Hebrew, it means “sea of bitterness and sorrow, with sea meaning the depths of water and psyche as well as the sea connected to the moon and tides and seasons that are constant” (Megan, 1995, p. 27). Our Lady suffered with her Son as He underwent His passion and death for our salvation and she is still experiencing many sorrowful moments in our contemporary era, especially with the blasphemies committed against her Immaculate Heart. These blasphemies are: the blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception, against her virginity, against the Divine Maternity, refusing at the same time to accept her as the Mother of all mankind, those who try publicly to implant in the children’s hearts indifference, contempt, and even hatred against this Immaculate Mother, and those who insult her directly in her sacred images. Finally, the Lady of Sorrows experiences a lot of torture in her Immaculate Heart from those who exaggerate her powers and misuse her name and apparitions to disobey the Church’s authorities and worse still indoctrinate people erroneously. Oftentimes, you would hear such Marian heretics say “Our Lady said …” They end up confusing people’s faith and giving the devil the opportunity to triumph in the sin of disobedience and confusion. Stop causing confusion in the Household of God’s people, stop deceiving yourself and people of God and let all of us stop committing sin willfully and taking the Mercy of Jesus Christ for granted.
Prayer: Let intercession be made for us, we beseech You, O Lord Jesus Christ, now and at the hour of our death, before the throne of Your mercy, by the Blessed Virgin Mary, Your Mother, whose most holy soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the hour of Your bitter Passion. Through You, O Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns world without end. Amen. (Pope Pius VII prayers in honor of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady).
